Kumuka Worldwide Newsletter January 2010

Dear Kumuka traveller

Meg Hall

Happy New Year! It's hard to believe that January is already almost over! One more month and we'll be up for another season change and the next thing we know we'll be thinking about Christmas again! I hope you have stuck to your new year's resolutions at least until now.

With the big freeze happening in the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere melting under record temperatures, I think it might be a good time to head to the equator where the sun rises and sets at the same time each day and the weather is either sunny or not so sunny. Either way it has to be better than freezing cold or boiling hot.

Wherever you may be heading in 2010, we'd like to wish you happy travelling.

Choose your own adventure!

There is more to travel than just choosing the destination, choosing the way you wish to travel can make or break your holiday, it is important to really understand the true nature of your journey before you arrive so that you can be prepared.

Here is a simple guide line to the way Kumuka travel around the world.

Overland Tours
For those seeking adventure, our Overland tours offer “off the beaten track” participation itineraries in custom built vehicles. Using a combination of camping and local hotels these tours are an up close and personal insight into some of the world’s most exciting destinations. Overland trips can be quite physically demanding but are suitable for almost anyone with a healthy appetite for adventure. Overland expeditions this way

Trekking

Trekking
If you have a love for the great outdoors, a good level of physical fitness and enjoy being one on one with nature then this is the style of holiday for you. Fully guided, our treks vary from easy walks to non technical mountain climbs. We partner with local experts who have a solid and reliable background in hiking and trekking, together with unrivalled back up and logistics experience. Trekking tours this way

Small Group Tours
Designed for those who enjoy the company of an intimate group of like minded people. The style offers the security of travelling with a group, the structure of a guided tour and the independence of free time for your own exploration. Most tours stay in the comfort of local hotels with some using soft camping options. Small group tours this way

European Coach Tours
Not everyone wants to drink their way around Europe, nor follow the herd from one tourist trap to another with every minute of their tour accounted for. If free time mixed with structured touring, staying in comfortable 3 – 4 star accommodation and travelling in the luxury of a coach is the way you want to see Europe, then this is the style for you. Lodge

Lodge Based Safaris
The traveller who enjoys real comfort by night doesn’t have to miss out on adventure by day. We recognize that roughing it isn’t for everyone and if this is you then you might want to consider travelling in style. The accommodation on lodge safaris are major highlights in themselves. They have been individually designed to complement their environment and are usually situated in unique and remote locations. Many are within National Parks, where listening to the sounds of the wild at night is not to be forgotten. Lodge based safaris this way

Tailor-Made Itineraries
If you are going on honeymoon, arranging a trip overseas for your sporting group, taking a bunch of mates on the trip of a life time or simply want to do it ‘your way’, our tailor made department is the best place for you to start, using the operation we have across 7 continents we can put together bespoke itineraries for the most eclectic of tastes. Tailor-Made tours this way

Family Adventures
The name says it all, if you want to take your family travelling on the road less travelled, then look no further, these itineraries are slower paced than your average adventure holiday and take advantage of 3 – 4 star accommodation apart from our African wildlife safaris. Laced with activities that entertain the whole family they are the perfect generation entertainment amalgam. Family adventure holidays this way

Staff Spotlight:

Meet Belinda Allport – Reservations Consultant Australia

Meet Belinda Allport

Having travelled all over the world and worked on the road as a tour guide with Kumuka in Europe and the Middle East, Belinda hung up her footloose and fancy free days when a husband and two children entered her life. Late last year she hooked into the virtual private Kumuka network to work as a consultant from home where she can now juggle a family/work balance and keep in touch with her passion, travel.

In her own words:

What made you join Kumuka? Kumuka has great tours, travels to exciting destinations and offers flexible working options.

Favourite place? For city life: NY city, it’s amazing! For scenery: Austria. For lifestyle: Italy. For complete culture shock: Japan.

Favourite Bar - why? Joe’s Garage Portugal – nothing like getting a bucket of water thrown at you and chased out by motorbikes and chain saws! Plus the music is pretty cool.

Favourite Restaurant - why? I don’t know its name, a little tratoria near the Vatican in Rome. It does the BEST pasta I've ever had

If you could take one famous person travelling who would it be and why?
Al Gore, to hear his views on sustainable tourism practices, we'd get to some pretty amazing places I'd imagine

If you could jump on a Kumuka trip tomorrow what would it be and why?
Depends if I could find a baby sitter or not! If I could then Bhutan - Heart of the Dragon to see a culture that is unique and preserved, and countryside which has awesome scenery. I’d love to take the whole family on the Giraffes, Elephants and Warriors Family Adventure, to show my kids the wildlife and give them the opportunity to hang out with kids with a completely different way of life.

Best travel tip? Hair straighteners don't work as well when using adaptors overseas - be prepared to battle hair frizz a different way.

Quirkiest habit? always checking, at least twice, that I have shut the front door when leaving the house

Photos in Pisa and the World's Best Gelato

Heidi travelled on the Kumuka tour European Winter

I always promised myself that if I ever went to Pisa I would never EVER take one of those tacky tourist photos of myself holding up the leaning tower…and yet here I am…posing for the camera just like everyone else in Pisa’s Cathedral Square…and I’m loving every minute of it!

Holding up leaning Tower of Pisa

This afternoon we’re off to Florence where I plan on stuffing my face with what I hear is some of the best gelato in the world – even the cold European Winter weather can’t put me off gelato! And after a few days in Florence we’re heading further south to visit the Pope in Rome!

I’ve only been here half a day so far, but Italy has already worked its way up to being on my list of top favourite countries. The scenery, the language, the views - not to mention the food!
And after Italy we’ve still got Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and the Netherlands to go… I have a feeling my list of favourite countries will grow as this trip continues…

Thank you Kumuka for this amazing tour - I’m looking forward to the rest of my trip and every tacky tourist picture that comes with it!

What You Say:

Flavours of Vietnam

Vietnam

The tour far exceeded my expectations, and was great value for the price; I will be taking another of these tours next winter.

Based on the price I had expected hotels a notch above a youth hostel, minimal meals, etc. The hotels were great, 3 star properties in Vietnam are good little hotels with service and local character, I would not have wanted to stay in the international 4 and 5 star hotels.

The included meals exceeded my expectations as well, a variety of styles and local flavours.

Our guide Mr Nguyen Van Quang, did an exceptional job with the group, managing the schedule well, lots of factual and anecdotal information that made the presentations interesting and real. His knowledge, people skills, and expertise were well above the average and he should be congratulated.

Cheers,
Nick

Learn some Spanish

Learn some Spanish

When travelling with Kumuka Worldwide in South America you do not need Spanish to get by, as your Tour Leader will act as translator for you. It is always helpful to know a few words to help interact with the locals and make your trip more enjoyable.

Here are some fun and memorable sayings to listen out for and use when on your travels.

1. Buena suerte - good luck
2. Cheveré - awesome, great (Ecuador - Peru)
3. Ché, Boludo! - You idiot! (in a nice way, to a friend) (Argentina)
4. La boca es la vida - The boca football team is my life. (Argentina)
5. Uruguay no es una provincia de Argentina - Uruguay is not a province of Argentina
6. Los Chilenos son guapos - Chileans (people) are good looking
7. Una cerveza / pisco sour / vino tinto por favor - 1 beer / pisco sour / red wine please
