PRESS RELEASE
January 2005
DON’T MISS THE PARTY OF THE YEAR AT SALVADOR CARNIVAL,
BRAZIL.
Come the first week of February 2005, Carnivals will spring
to life and explode in cities all over Brazil and the biggest
and best of these takes place in Salvador on Brazil’s
North Eastern coast. Carnival here is allegedly even greater
than in Rio and for years was a well kept secret until the insider
news leaked out: this is THE place to celebrate!
This wild street party lasts from dusk to dawn, winding its
way through the city’s streets and on to the old town,
spilling over onto the beach, where revellers dance until the
sun crawls up over the horizon.
Salvador is the capital of Bahia state and is situated on a
coastline lapped by turquoise seas, shimmering white sand beaches
and encircled by coconut groves. It is the home of the Pelourinho:
the famous historical district of cobblestone streets, red-roofed
colonial houses painted in sherbet lemon and baby blue, ancient
churches, galleries and open-air restaurants. Salvador boasts
a rich history and has its tangled roots entwined way back in
the African slave trade. The city is a centre for Afro-Brazilian
culture and spirituality: discover a bizarre cocktail of candomble
(Brazil’s answer to voodoo) and Catholicism. Between all
that dancing, make sure you sample the immense variety of tropical
fruits and the local specialities of moqueca de peixe - fish
in coconut milk stew - and the famous acaraje - shrimp patties.
And of course, find time to chill out on one of those tropical
beaches that border the city!
It is said that Carnival in Salvador attracts an estimated two
million people, with up to one and a half million dancing in
the streets at any one time! But who’s counting? Partygoers
are too busy dancing, partying, going somewhere, going nowhere.
And hundreds of drummers and thousands of dancers and singers
ensure that the party just keeps on going! Whilst you’re
there, don’t forget to try the acai - the legendary Amazonian
berry which Brazilians claim gives them the energy needed to
dance the night away - as Carnival in Salvador is all about
YOU being out there on the streets, dancing till sunrise!
