Dear Kumuka Traveller

Jackie Fingland

As Christmas is just around the corner, I got to thinking, has anyone ever taken the time out to ask Santa what he wants? So I called him up:

Me: Hi Santa, Jackie from Kumuka here, how you doing?
Santa: Jackie, the girl that changed addresses every year and caused absolute chaos for my little elves because the system kept crashing. The normal person moves only 3 times in their life you know, have you got roller blades for feet girl?
Me: Um, no no that was my twin sister, anyways Santa, just a quick question for you, if the roles were reversed, what would you ask for, for Christmas?
Santa: Ho, ho, ho, that would be the day!
Me: No really Santa, pretend this is an imaginary conversation where you can dream up whatever you like, what would you ask for, for Christmas?
Santa: Ah why didn’t you just say, if this is an imaginary conversation, then I’ll play along. I would love to have time to stop off and actually see more of the world, instead of my usual one night a year intense travel excursions. I must admit, I have been secretly looking through your brochures, which I tripped over in someone’s living room, and been dreaming up a combination of your tours ever since!
Me: Oh really Santa? I would love to see your ideas, any chance you could forward them in an email to me? Would you mind if I published them in my next newsletter?
Santa: Go ahead my dear, spread joy and love to the world, and share this Christmas.

Wherever in the world you may be this festive season, happy reading, happy travels and happy Christmas to all.

So here it is, Santa’s Dream Itinerary

Machu Picchu

Patagonian Loop from Lima to Rio de Janeiro. I’d like to see the condors in Colca Canyon, and teach them how to fly better. They always get in the way of my sleigh! Then trekking the Inca Trail would not only provide me with a greater understanding of the ancient Incan’s I used to deliver presents to, some 500 years back, but would also do wonders for the trimming down of my belly. With all the toys I have in stock, making optical illusion photos in the Salt Flats would be an absolute hoot. I could pretend I am fighting a dinosaur or I am jumping over a car, the options are endless. The beautiful scenery of the Lake Districts would make a nice change from the absolute white of the North Pole, like finally, someone painted the big white canvas. Dancing the night away at a hot salsa club in BA, learning a few steps of tango, viewing the almighty falls of Iguazu, and finishing up in the party capital of Rio de Janeiro, what more could you ask for!

Great Wall of China

Contrasts of China Tour from Beijing to Shanghai. I’d like to see what all the fuss is about, with this 6,700km long wall. It hardly seems a distance to me. That is only about a 10th of the distance I personally travel in one night, on Christmas Eve! Seeing pandas in real life would be marvellous, I am always wrapping up fluffy, little toy pandas for the kids. The Forbidden City is the world’s largest surviving palace complex, and from my bird’s eye view, it looks like a great place for exploring. I also feel slightly dangerous entering a place that was once “forbidden”. Having lived in the same house for hundreds of years, it would be great to get some inspiration for a new garden from the Summer palace, a fine example of traditional Chinese gardening. Also a source of inspiration, the massive pillars of grey rock in the Shi Lin Stone forest. Some of these natural stone formations have the appearance of animals such as snakes, elephants, birds, and dragons. A naturally made toy store!

Namibia

Cape to the Equator from Cape Town to Nairobi. I’m never allowed to get even a little bit tipsy on this full time job, in case I mess up the presents and give grandma’s brand new knitting needles to little Johnny! A bit of wine tasting in Stellenbosch will do the trick, followed by a mild detox, canoeing down the Orange River that forms the border of South Africa and Namibia, and sweating it all out. Up into Namibia, to the photographer’s haven of Fish River Canyon, the photos would make great Christmas cards. Then on to Sossusvlei for the famous walk up dune 45 to watch an amazing African sunrise, followed by a champagne breakfast. A bit of sky diving, sand boarding and dune buggying in Swakopmund to get the old ticker racing again, followed by a relaxing all natural trip to the Okavango delta. More adrenaline pumping at Vic falls, with bungee jumping and walking with lions, then on to tan my North Pole skin on the pristine white beaches of Zanzibar, finishing off with the amazing wildlife world of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Now that’s what I call real magic!

What You Say

European Waltz

European Waltz

I had the best holiday ever.

I have just arrived back from doing a European Waltz tour and the service provided by both Kevin and Susan Burn was exceptional and first class. Kevin’s driving was superb, even under pressure. Susan knowledge and expertise on the attractions, culture, history and people, cities visited were spot on. Susan even gave us language lessons on tour to help us communicate with the locals with ease, this I did not expect! The thing about Kumuka that separates them from the rest of the other tour companies is that they teach you to travel independently and importantly give you valuable tips and pointers that other companies don't want you to know because you could end travelling by yourself and not with them again. The beauty of travelling with Kumuka is that they give you plenty of spare time to visit the major attractions, the meals and entertainment were fantastic and carefully reflected the culture of the places visited, the accommodation was of a good standard and conveniently located close to transport amenities near the city centre/in the city centre itself. Importantly what made my kumuka holiday a memory of a lifetime is the people on tour, you get the chance to make friends and keep in contact. They even helped me celebrate my birthday in Berlin in style - THIS WAS A TOTAL SURPRISE TO ME!!! I enjoyed the Kumuka travel experience so much that I will definitely book my next holiday with Kumuka and have already made plans to do so.

Travel Tip of The Month

Choose carefully who you travel with

Who do you travel with?

Choose carefully who you travel with. Before you decide to set off on a long adventure, maybe try a weekend getaway with the intended travelling partner first. Friends can be great mates at home, but the minute they step off that plane into an exciting exotic destination things can turn around very quickly. You are the kind who loves adventurous activities, they love every museum and building in sight. That’s not to say you can’t travel together, all you need to do is have an agreement that you can each go off and do your thing, and meet up later over a cold beer to discuss the day’s activities.

Foto Friday: Riding the Death Road

Land Cruiser on the Flats

Dozens of people do it each day, and it is may be one of Bolivia’s, if not South America’s, greatest adventure travel attraction. But until you do it, you can’t really imagine what it’s like. Imagine cruising at top speed across loose gravel, through mud puddles, and hopping along a washboard road while at the same time having nearly a kilometer’s drop straight down just to your left. High waterfalls sprinkle down on top of you to add to the drama, something you’ll never be short of on this downhill mountain biking adventure.
