WELCOME
MAXIMILLIAN PEMBA HALL!
From
everyone at Kumuka Worldwide, we would like
to congratulate Meg and husband Jon, and welcome
to the world Maximillan Pemba Hall, born on
the 24th April 2006. As a Venture subscriber
and reader, you will have followed Meg through
the journey of her first pregnancy, and we
are delighted to announce the safe and healthy
arrival of what we hope will be a future Kumuka
recruit. An upcoming tour leader perhaps?
A marketing guru in the making? In any case,
an intrepid traveler at the very least.
In
a timely coincidence, this month Kumuka is
also welcoming the launch of our new Family
Adventure Tours in Asia – something
sure to be enjoyed by Meg and her new family!
To check out the new tours, log on to our
website, and take the kids somewhere different
this year!
In
this months Venture, Meg digs deep into the
dreams of the Kumuka Worldwide team to compile
the list of ‘20 Kumuka Things To Do
Before You Die’, Mark is so excited
by his tour in Cappadocia, Turkey, that he
can’t help but drop into a local cyber
café to let us know, and we also meet
Tour-Leader-turned-Operations-Manager Jane
Harris, who is missing Brazilian Cachaça
now that she is back in her home town of Leicester,
UK.

20 Kumuka Things
to do Before You Die
We
all have a list of things we want to achieve
before we die. Some are as simple as getting
married, having a baby and buying a house.
Some include climbing Everest and going to
the moon. Others are in-between.
I
cast this question into the wide world of
Kumuka and have come up with a list of 20
Kumuka Things to do Before You Die
as nominated by the Kumuka Staff. We could
name the obvious, such as stand on the Great
Wall of China, visit Antarctica or gaze at
the Great Pyramids of Giza, but thought we’d
put the Kumuka twist on it.

* Please BYO loved one.
NB: Some activities are seasonal and cannot
be guaranteed, plan ahead and contact our
travel team to increase your chances.

What
the hell am I doing in a cyber café?
Dear
Kumuka,
I
dropped into this cyber café to let
the family know I am still alive and thought
I’d quickly drop you an e-postcard to
let you know what an amazing time I’m
having!
I’ve
just returned from the city tour in Cappadocia,
Turkey where we spent hours above and below
ground exploring the tunnels and bizarre ancient
living quarters of this surreal location.
It was like one huge rabbit warren and mind
boggling trying to understand why it was built
in the first place!?
Our
tour guide is excellent, he knows so much
about the history and culture, we feel more
like we’re travelling with a friend
than on a structured tour.
We’re
all off for a local meal tonight with folk
dancing, food and a few bevvies to celebrate
our mesmerizing day.
But
that’s enough, what the hell am I doing
in a cyber café when I could be out
there exploring some more.
Cheers
Mark Spandlet

| It’s
been a while since we heard from our fearless
mountain climber, Rex Pemberton, the youngest
Australian to conquer Mt Everest in 2005.
Rex’s
next quest is the seven summits i.e. the highest
mountain on every continent. Having already
conquered Asia, Australia and Africa; it is
South and North America, Europe and Antarctica
that remain.
All
set to head to South America and attempt Aconcagua
in December 2005, Rex’s plans were foiled
by an airline strike, followed by a parachuting
incident, rendering him Australia bound for
a few more months, until the North America
climbing season opened.

Recovered,
banned from parachuting, and booked on a route
where a few more airlines travel, Rex is now
packed and ready to hit Mt Denali (formerly
McKinley) in Alaska in late May. Though lower
in altitude, Mt Denali has a larger bulk and
rise than Mt Everest and is known for its
extremely cold weather due to latitude, the
success rate on the mountain is on average
only 50%.
Following
this attempt, Rex then plans to head to Russia
to try his luck on Elbrus and finish the year
in the southern end of the planet scaling
Aconcagua in Argentina and Mt Vinson Massif
in Antarctica.
Sponsored
again by Kumuka Worldwide, keep an eye out
on Venture for his talking circuits later
in the year where he will be motivating people
to venture a little further, and raising awareness
for UNICEF.
We
wish Rex all the best on his next quest!

Meet
Jane Harris, Operations Manager
The
epitome of ‘Globe Trotter’, Jane
Harris has worked on the road for Kumuka in
Africa, the Middle East and South America.
Jane traded her travelling boots in a few
months ago for a more domestic life back home
in the UK, but keeps her hand on the big wide
world of Kumuka by organising operations.
It is the variety that has her hooked, one
minute she can be found answering questions
about the wildlife in the Serengeti and the
next moment she will be trying to find
the best hotels for our groups in Rome.
In her own words
The thing I like most about travelling
is… The food! I am from Leicester
(home of Daddy Lambert, who at 57 stone
was the world’s heaviest man!) therefore
it follows that I am always looking out
for new things to try, although not necessarily
in Daddy L size portions.
If I was holding a travel theme dinner
party I’d cook… An Argentinean
BBQ, steaks, lamb, salad and lots of
beer and wine.
I have a quirky habit of…
Sleeping in my glasses and waking up to find
that they are no longer useful as glasses,
but make very nice midget coat hangers.
My favorite foreign drink is…
Home brewed Ginger Cachaça from Brazil,
hotter than Nando´s chilli sauce and
guaranteed to get everyone up doing the Samba.

•
The material to build the
Taj Mahal was brought in from various parts
of India by a fleet of 1000 elephants.
•
The Great Pyramids used to be as white as
snow because they were encased in a bright
limestone that has worn off over the years.
•
The Eiffel Tower was the tallest structure
in the world before the construction of the
Empire State Building in 1930.

Returning from Europe Thusitha Perera writes
in.
Hi
Kara,
I
would definitely travel with Kumuka again.
My trip to Europe was my first time travelling
by myself and my first time in Europe and
the tour was much better than I expected.
What I mean by that is that I had the freedom
to do the things I wanted to do, at the pace
I wanted to go, with the safety of being with
the tour. I was always able to find someone
that was interested in doing the same things
as me and I had a very enjoyable time. Our
tour guide was really good and made life as
a traveller very easy.
