What will your family be talking about this Christmas?

I recently took a trip to South Australia to see my extended family and to introduce Max, my now 5-month-old son, to them. It was a whirlwind of a journey catching up with people from all generations; X, Y, Baby Boomers and Seniors. Though sewn with the common thread of being members of my family, it was intriguing to sit back and look at the different age brackets and how travel has influenced all of our lives in one way or another.

My mother met my father just before a planned trip to Europe. She never made it to Europe that time but they have been the best travelling buddies and on the go ever since, including a trip to the continent when my brother and I were living there.

My sister in law comes from England; my brother met her when he was there on a gap year, travelling around the world. They will be gracing English soil this Christmas after a stop off in South East Asia to warm their bodies in preparation for the colder climes.

My husband I met in South America whilst on an Overland Tour, we married in Africa and remain addicted to the road, even with a baby in tow!

My Aunty and Uncle were off to Egypt the week I visited; they have both had a strong hankering for the history of this country and were off to quench their thirst.

My young cousin was about to head off to North America on her first overseas trip and was bursting with that ‘first time traveller’s’ enthusiasm that I remember oh-so-well.

We sound like a fabulously global-roaming family, but the truth is we’re pretty damn normal for this day and age. Travel is accessible and has made us all rich in experiences.

Visiting my family reminded me of the different benefits of travelling: fun, friendship, learning, adventure and great conversations around the dinner table. Travel has brought us, as a family, even closer together, as over and above blood we have a common interest that breaks down all generation barriers.

Every Christmas our conversations are laced with tales of foreign lands, we often pull out the silly hats collected from various countries around the world and wear them instead of party hats, we cook food from various countries and bring out all the tacky souvenirs collected along the way; it really adds a great flavour to our family gatherings.

When we are not altogether for Christmas it normally means some of us are in an exotic locale enjoying the break under foreign skies.

It’s a fun exercise to add up all the countries your family members have travelled to. Do it, you’ll be surprised. Perhaps add it to your Christmas activities list. Or why not go a step further and venture a little further this Christmas?

Back from the wild

Hola Kumuka,

Salutations from Santiago! We’ve just spent the past week crossing a wild celestial desert from La Paz to Santiago. The Altiplano, as they call it out here (high plain), ranges from approx 2500 – 5000 metres above sea level and is one crazy part of the world. Hardly a soul lives in the most desolate places but the most desolate are the most striking. The landscape is as you would expect on the moon, the sky is so deep and close it feels as if we could touch it, whilst the extinct and active volcanoes punctuate the unruffled remoteness with a sensation of action.

I never really thought about this part of my journey. I booked the Andean Adventure and was looking forward to the typical highlights eg. the Inca Trail, Nazca Lines, Amazon etc. Granted, they were amazing, but the Altiplano took me by surprise, I can honestly say that it stands out as a major highlight for me. There are so few places in this world where you really feel isolated and wild, in some areas no roads exist and the local traffic just follows the sun.

Well done Kumuka for putting together one wild itinerary.

Gracias
Dan Roanald

Here are some tips to help you enjoy your flight as much as possible.

Being confined to a cubic metre for up to 24 hours can send the most patient people around the bend.

Here are some tips to help you not only survive, but enjoy your flight.

Pack magazines, books and your own personal games. Although most aircraft have personal in-flight entertainment systems, they don’t always work and the movies are not always what you want to see, have a back-up entertainment plan.

Take your watch off. Don’t time-keep, staring at your watch will only make the journey seem longer.

Make up secret stories about the people around you. This is especially entertaining on those full flights. People watching can make the hours simply fly by and you’ll find yourself happy that the flight has so many characters on it to observe.

Start your diary. The journey began the moment you chose to travel, if you plan to keep a travel diary then start it on your flight if you haven’t already.

Drink plenty of water. It is fun take to advantage of the free in-flight alcohol to pass the time, but don’t forget, this is just the start of the journey and arriving in a foreign country hungover and dehydrated is not fun, top up on the H2O.

Move. By keeping your body moving while you are awake you will not only avert deep vein thrombosis, you will ease aches and pains making sleep a lot easier to achieve.

Tune out to a meditation CD or your favourite music. If you are the type who can relax to meditation sounds or just your own favourite tunes, don’t forget to pack your iPod to help you zone out.

Pace yourself. Don’t read every magazine, play every game, write your diary and listen to your favourite tunes all at the beginning of the journey or you’ll be left with nothing to look forward to. Instead do one activity, chill out, people watch then do another time and time again and you’ll find the time vanishing.

Meet Kara Withers, Travel consultant Kumuka Australia.

Originating from Sydney, Kara spent 6 years on a cattle station so there is a bit of “country” to be found in her. She up and left Australia to traipse around Asia, Europe and North America, with a desire to broaden her view of the world. Back in Australia and in the travel industry she says there is still a lot more broadening to do, so watch out world, Kara isn’t finished yet! Meanwhile she spends her free time catching up with mates, having a few beers and a lot of laughs.

In her own words:

My favorite country is Nepal, how can you beat trekking through the biggest mountain range in the world? It’s such a beautiful country with people to match.

If I were to pack my bags and jump on a Kumuka trip tomorrow it would be the African Drums, I have always wanted to see Africa. Travelling with Kumuka you camp and get back to basics whilst enjoying the surrounding’s. This would also give me the opportunity to interact with the locals and experience different cultures.

If I were to choose my favourite travel beverage it would have to be any of Thailand’s beers on a balmy day.

My favourite foreign saying is “Prost” (cheers in German, an invitation to drink beer!)

I challenge myself every time I go travelling by eating something covered in a wrapper in a language I simply cannot translate. It is always a culinary surprise!

Returning from Europe Mark writes in.

My name is Mark Fitzsimmons and I have just finished the 10-day leg of a 28-day tour in Europe. Just wanted to say what a blast I had. Our tour guides, Susan and Kevin went out of their way to ensure that everyone on board had a great time. I would appreciate it if you could pass on my thanks to both Sue and Kev. I would highly recommend a Kumuka tour to any of my friends thinking about touring Europe.

Once again, a big thank you to Susan and Kevin and hopefully I will see them again some time on my next Kumuka tour.

The journey definitely does begin here.

Mark Fitzsimmons
