Well its been a busy time for us at Kumuka with the new brochures being designed, produced and printed. Europe is not too far away from our shelves followed by Asia, Latin America and Africa will come in the for the grand finale. If you are thinking of booking an existing tour, now is the time to do it, as the old brochure prices will not last forever!
We have a bundle of new tours coming out in our new brochures. A hint at what to look forward to; think Antarctica, Tibet and the Fjords of South America. Click here and email us your address if you would like a brochure to be sent to you hot off the press. In the mean time this month we hear from Jo in the Middle East, Laura in South America, we get some tips on time fillers for driving days and go on a worldwide safari.

Happy travels everyone,

It’s a Worldwide Safari.

I was having a bbq with my parents on the weekend in a national park here in Australia, the local birds were obviously used to visitors and were hanging around us like puppy dogs wanting our food.

Of course the minute our back was turned they were on the table and stealing the culinary delights, they were too quick for us. It was interesting to watch the hierarchy in the group, the kookaburras seemed to be the dominant species, the magpies the scavengers and the crows the overseers. It reminded me of my travelling times on foreign continents watching animals in the wild moving about in their own ecosystems, seeing the struggle for survival in the raw.

I’ll never forget my first trip overseas. How could I? It changed my life – six months in Africa – who’s life wouldn’t change?

I was totally overwhelmed by everything I saw in Africa, it was quite an adventurous step for the young first time traveller. Thankfully I chose an organised tour otherwise I don’t think my mother would be speaking to me still. Saying goodbye to your daughter as she heads off to cross the continent of Africa isn’t the easiest thing to do, the organised tour at least gave my Mum a point of contact for me whilst in the dark continent.

My first trip into the Masai Mara was to be a memory to keep forever. This was to be my first opportunity getting up close and personal with the big 5 and the wild ecosystems of Africa. I had never seen anything roaming free apart from kangaroos, well you can imagine my excitement when we spotted an elephant for the first time, it’s a very surreal experience, elephants were from the zoo weren’t they? It was one of those “wow” moments, when you really realise that you are in Africa, it is the real thing.

Though I was equipped with quite a good camera the elephant was still some distance away, how our local guide spotted it, I’ll never know but I was thankful to have the expertise with us on tour. I don’t know what possessed me to press the shutter button on my camera? I was spending 6 months on the continent, surely it’d get better than this, but excitement was my master and I clicked away, I took about 5 photos of this spec on the horizon.

If I were writing this article 5 years ago I would advise – hold onto your camera’s there’s better things to come, but now that we are in the digital age and you are more than likely travelling with a multitude of memory cards, my advice is snap away. The before and after shots are a lot of fun.

As you can see by the 'after' shot the photo opportunities only got better. We soon saw lions procreating, cheetah hunting antelope, vultures circling carrion, hyena cleaning carcasses. It truly was the circle of life, we were so lucky to see it all first hand.

The beauty about travel is the fact that you can keep seeing things for the first time. This world is big and you don’t need to restrict yourself to Africa to go on a safari. Note Safari is Swahili for “journey” - a journey can happen anywhere. There is an abundance of wildlife to be see on every continent, and a must to build into your travel itineraries.

Hint: You will learn a lot about the animals you visit when you get there but being prepared for what you are about to see will make your travels so much more fulfilling. Don’t forget to jump on the internet, buy some books and learn about our terrestrial companions before you arrive, it will make your experience so much more memorable.

This list may help you in choosing your worldwide Safari

Rhino walk in Southern Africa
Lion walk in southern Africa
Gorilla trek in Uganda
Piranha fishing in the Pantanal
Diving in Egypt
Camels riding in India
Elephant trek in Thailand
Elephant and Rhino safari in Nepal
Condors in South America
Pandas in China
Orangutan sanctuary in Borneo
Whale watching in Patagonia

This compilation by no means covers all of our animal highlights, it is merely a smattering, something to whet your appetites.

One of the beautiful things about our planet is the animals we share it with.
One of the greatest things about travelling is visiting and learning about these animals first hand.
There’s nothing quite like the real thing.

So – where’s your next safari?

Hi Guys!

Well, I am now in Egypt and loving it! You would be so jealous, you really have to get here as soon as possible. It is even more amazing than all the stories I've heard and all the photos I have ever seen! We are coming to the end of our three week tour, which is the only bad thing that I can say about the whole trip. The Kumuka truck is such a fantastic way to travel and our group is really cool, we are getting along so well! We have been through Turkey, Syria and Jordan and have finally made it to Dahab in Egypt for some R&R. I am sitting on a deck chair now, in the sun, congratulating myself on my 1st ever scuba dive! WOW! Looking forward to seeing the Pyramids and cruising down the Nile, I will have to pinch myself then! Wonder if they can top Petra! Everywhere has blown my mind, so much history, delicious food, crazy people and non-stop sunshine! Love it, love it, love it.

I have so many photos to show you when I get home,

Luv Jo xx

When travelling overland it is inevitable that there will be days on tour when the major activity for the day is driving to the next destination. On paper it doesn’t sound all that exciting but these can be some of the best days on tour. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your journeys.

Get your camera ready.
When travelling long distances the countryside you see in the morning will more than likely be completely different by days end, along the way there may be stunning scenery to snap up, so go snap-happy.

Do you have an MP3/CD player?
Music is an extremely evocative memory jogger, driving days are ideal for kicking back with the IPOD, listening to your favorite tunes, staring out of the window in a day dream and letting the countryside pass you by as you reflect on the tour gone by. Chances are, when the tour is over and you are home and back into the rat race you will suddenly hear a song that you listened to that day and fond memories will flood back.

Time for a chat.
Haven’t managed to get to know all of the group yet? Choose to sit next to someone you haven’t spent much time with yet and swap a few tales.

Bring out your games.
Games are a universal time filler. Here are some of our clients favorites
1. UNO (card game)
2. Cards A lot of people who travel would never consider playing cards to pass time at home, its amazing how many converts we get. Popular games such as 500, poker or hearts get a good work out on long drives or around the campfire, though we don’t condone gambling, there is nothing wrong with playing for matchsticks or points. Purchase a good card games book prior to your arrival.
3. Cities or movie stars
Rules : Player one picks a city or a famous person eg. Nairobi or Nicole Kidman, player 2 follows up with a city or movie star who’s name starts with the last letter in player 1’s word eg. Istanbul or Nelson Mandela... and so the play goes on, there are no limits to number of players.
4. Charades.

Meet Laura Pattara,
tour leader in South America.

Originally from Italy, Laura moved to Australia 10 years ago and set up as a beauty specialist. That was until she decided to go on holiday with Kumuka then everything changed. She had so much fun that she returned and booked another, so much fun was her second tour that she returned and applied for a job - she never looked back.

Laura has been seen in such countries as: China, Japan, Thailand, France, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador...and Italy of course!
Laura can most often be found eating: Anything Italian and Thai (but don’t tell her Mamma)
Her odd habits include: Sleeping with a photo of her family under her pillow and wearing mascara on tour (we haven’t quite erased the beauty therapist out of her yet!)
A couple of the things Laura likes most about being a tour leader is: Being in a different place every 2 days and opening peoples eyes to new cultures.
In her own words: I`m having an absolute blast here!

Comments from ...
Jodie Gatehouse who joined Kumuka’s Wildlife and Falls and Southern Star
Tours in Africa.

Hi there,
I have recently returned from a 3 month trip travelling around Eastern and Southern Africa. Most of my time spent in Africa was on a Kumuka Tour - firstly Wildlife and Falls (departing 22nd May 2005) and then I continued on to do the Southern Star from Zimbabwe down to Cape Town.
Our tour leader Susie Bradbury and our tour driver Mike Sexton for the Wildlife and Falls tour, far exceeded my expectations with their endless assistance, patience and ability to adapt to all situations. They were always approachable and willing to help in any way they could and made my trip (and I am sure many others) a million times better for it.
I had the most amazing time of my life in Africa and would like to thank Kumuka, and in particular Susie and Mike for making my trip so enjoyable, safe and an adventure I will never forget.

Thank you again, Jodie Gatehouse
