Greetings from the other side of motherhood! Well late in April, as you know I gave birth to my son, Maximillian Pemba Hall. What an amazing experience, one of the best adventures I have been on. I already have an eye on Kumuka’s family tours where one day I hope to venture a little further with Max and show him this big wide and exciting world. What better education can there be for our children?

This month we travel the globe choosing the destination of our dreams, Brett Wendorf takes us trekking in the Annapurna’s in Nepal, Annalisa updates us on her 4 years with Kumuka and Lesley touches base from the Middle East.

Happy Travels

One of the hardest tasks when planning your travel is choosing the destination. A little like choosing your dream home, satisfaction is 90% achieved from location.

If you are ready for a trip of a lifetime but undecided about where to go, perhaps the following tips will give you more direction?

Why choose Asia?

Asia is an enormous continent so it is hard to pin point exact benefits and features common to every country but in general people head to Asia for the gentle people, the complex history and the religious undertones radiating from the temples and every day life, rendering the travel experience almost meditative. The spicy and flavoursome food is a major plus for most travellers who manage to have a culinary delight with every meal, whether it is from a street seller or a 5 star restaurant. When it comes to scenery, Asia has it all, from the highest mountain in the world to the most pristine beaches.

Why choose Africa?

Africa remains a favourite to the true adventurer, for those who wish to get off the beaten track and view life in its primitive form. The circle of life unfolds before the visitor’s eyes in the game parks where the big 5 can be viewed up close and personal as they hunt for survival. The people are varied and fascinating from the nomadic tribesmen in the north to the cosmopolitan city dwellers in the south. The fascinating adornments of many tribes leave the traveller speechless and very snap happy with their cameras. One cannot visit Africa without noticing the sky, no where in the world will you witness larger than life sunsets and starry nights, many hours are spent staring at the sky and simply reflecting.

Why choose Antarctica?

Antarctica is the last frontier, even the cruise ships only visit the very tip of the continent leaving the traveller wondering what else is out there. As comfortable as the cruise ships are, the experience is still that of an adventure as the journey travels over vast seas and visitors find themselves being transported to the mainland on zodiac boats rugged up in layers against the Antarctica cold. At the end of each day’s adventure though, there is always a warm meal and a comfortable bed, something that is needed after viewing a surreal sculptured ice landscape and colonies of wildlife found only at the end of the earth.

Why choose Latin America?

A lively land, heaving with vibrant music, colour, food, history, culture and scenery, it’s impossible to take in Latin America in one visit. The backbone of the Andes bursts from the bottom to top of South America whilst Central America is dotted with volcanoes, active and ancient. With such dramatic landscape adventure activities are a plenty from scaling volcanoes, to white water rafting, sand boarding, mountain bike riding, hiking and horse riding etc. Culture plays a pivotal part in the Latin America makeup both modern and ancient. Remnants of the past live in today’s Latino people who burst with energy and are amongst the most welcoming in the world living amongst some of the most enigmatic history on our planet.

Why choose Europe?

Europe is the modern and ancient world rolled into one. A major influence on the rest of the world as it works today, the beginnings of European history can unfold mysteries from around the planet, due to its continual influence since time began. In one days drive the traveller can pass through modern cities, ancient villages, mountain ranges and wineries then end up on the beach having spoken (if the traveller is clever enough) up to 7 different languages to the locals. Venture a little further and the variety only increases, it doesn’t repeat. The food in its diversity is heaven sent leaving the traveller in danger of putting on weight. The days in summer are endless; the days in winter are hushed and magical. Each day is an assault on the senses leaving the traveller breathless.

Why choose Middle East?

The cradle of civilisation, the Middle East is where modern time seems to have begun. A land covered in a variety of deserts from rocky outcrops to sculptured cliffs and oases, the Middle East offers the traveller a look into the nomadic lifestyle. Then bursting out of the sand, a myriad of mind blowing shrines, temples and ruins still stand dating back thousands of years, built by people like us but with very basic tools. Visit the museums and you can find yourself gazing at mummified remains of people who lived over 3 thousand years ago. The Middle East is a place where one thinks about their own lives, influences and future. We are on this planet for only a short time, its time to make the very most of it and venture a little further!

You walk from village to village, meeting weird and wonderful people, and you are literally dwarfed (or elfed or hobbited or orced or vertically challenged) by some of the tallest mountains of the world.

The journey will challenge you physically, change you spiritually, and really open up an entire new world to you in that once you trek Nepal, other forms of adventure travel seem easy.

If you truly want an unparalleled adventure, stop Tolkien, and start walkin.

The planning, packing and preparing stage of travel is very exciting for most travellers. But beware you can over do it!

Plan the tour that suits you:

Ensure you pick a destination you are interested in, the method of travelling that will suit your needs and a time of year that offers a good season for travel. Pick a good travel agent who will then assist with the finer details e.g. visas, pre and post tour accomodation, flights etc. Leave the nitty gritty up to the experts.

Pack the essentials.

Don’t get caught up in long lists produced by gear stores enticing you to pre purchase the kitchen sink before you travel. Even though some of the destinations you travel to may be more primitive than your home country most basics are still available, so if you forget something don’t panic, you more than likely can purchase it on arrival.

Note: if you are going trekking it is always wise to pre purchase shoes and walking packs in advance to wear them in pre arrival for safety and comfort.

Prepare your mind

Leave pre conceptions behind and pack an open mind, nothing will be a shock though there might be a few nice surprises, and everything will be an adventure. The highs will be plentiful and the lows will add to your dinner table conversations when you get home. Everything will add to your journey.

Meet Annalisa Rosadi, reservations consultant and sales support NSW Australia.

Joining the Kumuka team as a fresh faced travel college graduate, Annalisa could never have predicted that 4 years later she would be a converted traveller, enjoying camping, exotic cultures and cerveza! When not travelling in Central America or her beloved Europe, Annalisa can be found in Sydney talking up a storm about her travels.

In her own words

I love my job for the people I work with, the ability to travel and of course the odd daydream!

I love travelling, as on the road I don’t have a care in the world; everything that worried me at home no longer bugs me, it’s a refreshing taste of freedom.

If I had one free flight to anywhere in the world I’d go to Morocco!!! It’s been on my ”to do” list since the beginning! From what I hear it’s an amazing place with a unique culture, different to anywhere I have travelled so far.

My favorite foreign drink would have to be a good Mojito, the best ones can be found in Reds Sports Bar in Antigua.

An apple, potato, and onion all taste the same if you eat them with your nose plugged. They all taste sweet.

The average lifespan of a human taste bud is ten days.

People who have eaten beetles say they taste like apples.

Ketchup originated in China as a pickled fish sauce called ke-tsiap.

Returning from The Middle East Lesley writes in.

Dear Kumuka

A few weeks ago I went on a tour through Syria, Jordan and Egypt and just want to express to you how much of a great time I had. I absolutely loved the experience and it was helped by the two fantastic Kumuka crew Samantha and Christi.

Samantha is a great tour guide and very easy going - she did not treat us like children but gave us the information and showed us the way where needed. For someone who is not a local I was amazed by the amount of knowledge she had and the opportunities she gave everyone on the tour to learn more about how everyday things work, like giving us the choice to go shopping with her and see how things work.

Christi was a great driver and just so down to earth and friendly. He was a great help to anyone who needed it. Christi did some great driving through all those rough roads and kept the truck in top shape.

I have been on many tours in the last few years and would easily recommend Kumuka to friends, you have a great itinerary that is why I picked Kumuka and great staff.

Thankyou for everything
Lesley McLeod
