Here we are again in the middle of the year! As we shiver down here in the Southern Hemisphere, we are lapping up the warmth of the movie cinema’s and the Da Vinci Code. Meanwhile things are hotting up in Europe, our trips have been leaving London and Paris full to the brim with adventurers off to discover Europe; or are they secretly after the Holy Grail? One way or another, a Holy Grail of sorts will be discovered by most travellers as they achieve the ultimate in travel experiences.

This month we discover how the seven deadly sins can change your life, we find out what to do with our golden locks when travelling, Stephen Malley writes in from Jordan, and Carly Hood writes on India, plus more.

Take heed of the Seven Deadly Sins... They may just change your life for the better.

1. Envy is the desire for others' situation.
Admit it, you are sick to death of hearing about your friends/families travels. If you see one more slide show or are sent one more link to a personal website, brimming with happy snaps on location in an exotic locale, you are likely to burst. Why? Because you wish it were you, you’ve been stuck in a rut working 9 to 5, heading home to watch the idiot box, only to turn up the next day and do it all again. You spend most of your weekly earnings on weekend indulgences and have nothing to show for it. The last thing you need is for a smug traveller to point out what they have worked hard for and gone out and done.

2. Anger is manifested in the individual who opts for fury.
You are grumpy with yourself; suddenly that lobster thermidor you ate on Saturday night seems like a waste, that’s 50 dollars you could have put toward an adventure. Now you’re left with a stomachache and a bad taste in your mouth as you head back to the humdrum of 9 to 5 and idiot box.

3. Greed is the desire for gain
You decide it is not too late to change, you want to venture a little further and see the world, you want to see how other people live in other countries, you want to taste different food, you want to learn a different language, you want to stand amongst breathtaking scenery, you want to sit and watch the sun set then the stars rise, you want to not have a care in the world. Time for a change, you buckle down and focus on travelling the world with Kumuka Worldwide by saving some $ or taking advantage of the interest free finance.

4. Gluttony is a desire to consume more than that which one requires.
The next thing you know it is you on location in an exotic locale, not yet another friend or family member. You have worked hard to get to this point so now you indulge in local food; you immerse yourself in the local culture and take advantage of all of the optional activities presented to you. You fill yourself to the absolute brim with sensory overload and you love every minute of it. You’ve taken a multitude of photographs and can’t WAIT to get home to upload them onto your personal website and send the link around to your unsuspecting friends and family. Now you have stories to share with them, and not only be bored by their tales.

5. Sloth is the avoidance of work.
Well of course! You’re on holiday! Someone else is and has been working for you, from your travel agent to your tour leader and driver, everyone involved is doing their best to make sure your adventure becomes a trip of a life time.

7. Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities.
You look back at what you have achieved and take a little time to dwell on your accomplishment. You did it and you can do it again. Life will never look the same again.

8. Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.
We’ll leave that one up to your imagination!

So what are you waiting for? Take heed of the Seven Deadly Sins and Venture a Little Further.

Greetings from Jordan,

We’ve just returned from an absolute assault on the senses. Wadi Rum and Petra… totally mind blowing.

Wadi Rum is the ultimate desert, a vast land sculptured with stunning rock formations, dotted with camels and robed Jordanians with their checked red head dresses. It’s easy to get swept away and imagine yourself as Lawrence of Arabia. Spending hours out there in four-wheel drives was magic; we were off the beaten track, in what felt like untouched landscape.

Next was Petra, where we lost ourselves in this city of 800 monuments housing imposing buildings all carved into rock walls, still standing after thousands of years. Having the choice of getting around on a donkey or foot, I opted for my own two feet; I never have had a great relationship with four legged friends of any kind. I’m not sure who ended up better off, those on donkeys or feet, there is a LOT to cover. My feet ached by days end, but my friends on donkeys couldn’t sit down for dinner that night.

Still we all had an amazing time in the rose red city hidden in the mountains. Next stop Egypt, I can hardly wait.

So far having a ball and don’t want to come home.

Hairy tips!

Many people deliberate over what to do with their locks before travelling. Cut it? Keep it long? Get a style? Rely on a local hairdresser?

Here are our tips!

If you are planning a hair cut, unless you are really adventurous, get it cut before you travel. Don’t bank on finding a good hairdresser overseas, they may not be used to cutting your type of hair. For example, in Africa they are accustomed to thick, tight curls and may not know what to do with your long golden locks.

Get a style that is easy to manage as well as one you like to be seen in, as you will be taking photographs of yourself that you will be looking at for the rest of your life. You don’t want to cringe every time you open up your album.

Don’t cut it off. Funnily enough, long hair is one of the easiest styles to travel with. If you are not near a hair dryer or haven’t washed your hair for a while, easy, put it up and forget about it.

Men travelling to the Middle East – visit a barber at least once, you will be in for a treat! Even if it is only to get a shave, you will be in there for an hour drinking tea, being pampered, massaged, and de-haired. Not only will you come out looking like a new man, you will have had a fabulous local experience.

Meet Cara Gibson, Reservations Manager, London office.

Originally from New Zealand, Cara gave up the land of the long white cloud for Blighty and joined the Kumuka team over a year and a half ago. Her motivation being the drive to talk travel all day long, with one of her passions being the local cuisines found in the far reaches of the world. Not much of a cook herself, Cara has trained her husband to cook Tom Yum Soup with green curry, a taste acquired whilst travelling throughout in Thailand.

Cara has recently travelled to Africa where she experienced Kumuka's Gorilla & Game Tour, the highlights were of course the Gorilla's and seeing the big 5 in the Masai Mara.

In her own words:

I love my job because I can talk travel all day long and help people plan the trip of their lifetime.

If I had one free flight to anywhere in the world you’d find me in Borneo to see the Orangatans or Mexico to see the Mayan Ruins, Chichen Itza and the beaches.

When travelling I am known to talk, walk and laugh... strange thing is, it doesn't happen to me when I'm not travelling!

If you find me at a bar on my travels at a beach bar slurping on a margarita and soaking up the sun.

An elephant can throw a baseball further than a human.

A Zebra is white with black stripes, not black with white stripes.

In the last 4000 years no new animals have been domesticated.

Hi Kumuka,

I went on your ‘Splendours of India’ tour earlier this year and it was great! Very exciting, interesting and life changing! I met a whole heap of great people who I am still in touch with and would recommend this tour to anyone.

I particularly wanted to give credit to my tour guide Digvijay Shaktawat and am hoping this email will reach someone in HR and recruitment. Digvijay is an extremely responsible and dedicated tour guide who was always looking out for us, making sure we were all having a good time, and safe. He was always smiling and laughing and making the tour a fun experience. He was also very knowledgeable about the different areas of India we visited with him. He had good time management skills, we got to the places when he said we would (which is unusual for India) and was always on time in the mornings at the start of the day. I hope he continues to work with Kumuka, as he is an asset to the team.

Thank you very much!
Carly Hood.
