Coming for a swim?

As we bake in mid summer temperatures in the southern hemisphere, on the other side of the world the mercury has hit rock bottom. One thing that people in both hemispheres have in common right now is swimming. In the south we’re heading to the beaches to cool down, whilst in the north we dream of packing the bags and heading to warmer climes, donning the ‘cozzie and diving into exotic waters.

To help you beat or meet the heat why not head to one of Kumuka’s swimming holes this season?

Diving in Dahab, Egypt will blow your mind. On the edge of a desert, the waters surrounding the stunning coral reef are always crystal clear due to the lack of precipitation stirring up the underground. After a hot and dry trek across the desert, diving into the cool waters to the underwater garden is like dying and going to heaven!

Swimming in the Amazon in South America is for the adventurous, as you share the water with piranhas and caiman (alligators). Though under the watch of your trusted guide you are safe, it is still quite an adrenalin rush, and then a dream to dry off in shade of the jungle and watch pink dolphins playing near by as Toucans and Macaws fly overhead.

The soothing, warm, natural spring waters of the Aguas Calientes baths, in Peru, after 4 days trekking to Machu Picchu are a must! There is no greater geologic joy in the world than a hot spring strategically located at the end of a long trek. Surround the hot spring with snow capped mountains, and throw in a few ice-cold local beers, and you will be in complete bliss.

Côte d'Azur in the French Riviera is so hot right now!, OK so it’s actually a little cool at the moment but with sunshine 300 days a year and crystal clear water it is stunning all year round. In summer you can pretend you are rich and famous for the day, by hiring a day bed on the beach and lying there sipping cocktails with people wearing “bling” sitting right next to you.

There is nothing quite like chilling out at Caye Caulker, Belize. A tiny, laid-back Caribbean island with the world’s second longest reef within swimming distance of its shores. With diving and snorkelling options galore, as well as the lure of warm azure waters, and a fantastically preserved marine reserve, it is the ultimate place to float around and unwind.

Snorkelling off the coast of Zanzibar in Tanzania with green sea turtles is incredible; the water is clear, warm, turquoise blue and teeming with marine life. Back on land the most delicious seafood is being cooked up by skilled locals in rustic restaurants, where you can kick back at the end of the day, drink cold beer, eat culinary delights and forget all of your troubles.

The optional horse ride along the shores and into the water of Lake Malawi is a great way to see the area around Kande, not to mention going swimming with a horse! You often forget you are on the shores of a lake, so vast is Lake Malawi it feels more like the ocean.

With all of the beautiful bodies around it is a little intimidating to strip off, but swimming at Copacobana beach in Rio, Brazil is an experience of its own. The blend of "Carioca's" (Rio locals) and tourists, creates a exciting atmosphere which drives you into the beachside café’s at the days end to sip the local drink “capirinha” until the sun goes down. Then… its time to party!

Dipping in the Dead Sea in Jordan is a riot because you simply cannot sink! Try as you may you won’t go down, its great fun to just float around and read a newspaper then cover yourself with therapeutic mud!

The last place on earth you would probably imagine yourself stripping down to your swim suit is, in fact, the last place on earth – Antarctica. A swim in the hot springs at Pendulum Cove will offer you a unique experience as you feel snow on your shoulders whilst the hot water keeps you toasty. Don’t be surprised to see a friendly seal near by as you bathe in this ethereal swimming hole!

So what are you waiting for, swim a little further with Kumuka.

Buon giorno from Venice!

After a boat ride into the city we wandered into one of the most famous squares in the world. Piazza San Marco!

It was hard not to celebrate my arrival in this beautiful city by running through the flocks of scattered pigeons that visit the square.
The square itself is surrounded by incredible architecture, including the famous Basilica itself. Built in the 11th Century to house the body of St Mark – stolen from Egypt by Venetian merchants he now lies under the alter. The Byzantine architecture has since been covered in mosaics over five centuries.
Within walking distance, avenues from the square lead us past stores filled with carnivale masks to our Venetian glass making demonstration. Then after a gondola ride on the canals we revisited the square by night.

Filled with cafes & illuminated it was a great place for a pizza & pasta dinner, followed by gelato from a nearby stall for dessert.

The square has a new ambiance by night. We sat people-watching patrons of the cafe’s, Italian rose sellers and men shouting “Ciao Bella“. I can‘t help but think that I would love to say “Hello Beautiful“ to this city all over again someday....

One of the biggest questions in people’s minds before they head off on a group journey is “what will it be like travelling with a group of strangers?”

Some useful advice:

Everyone has travel in common.

• There is a high chance you will meet people you will be in contact with, if not good friends with (maybe even married to!), for the rest of your life. Spend time getting to know your travel companions.

• The chances are you won’t love everyone but that’s the beauty of group travel - you have a variety of people with whom you can spend time with.

• Everyone on tour is embarking on a highlight of his or her life. No matter what the experience, they will remember this journey and quite possibly you for as long as their memory allows.

• After only one day on tour you will already have a multitude of common experiences; friendships will form quickly.

• Everyone on tour will be posing the same questions to themselves before they arrive; you won’t be the odd one out.

• Group travel with Kumuka offers you the opportunity to meet friends from all over the world. What better inspiration can there be to venture a little further again, than to meet up with old friends on foreign shores!

Meet Ibrahim Dar, Senior Travel Consultant, Kumuka London office.

Born in Saudi Arabia, educated in England, with parents from Pakistan and having travelled the world, Ibi always has a story to tell! Not coming from a travelling background he stands out as a bit of a wild thing amongst his family as he has travelled through the Middle East, South and North America, Asia and Africa.

Though grown up with children of his own, it doesn’t stop him from venturing a little further! He can be found on a Friday night gathering the family together and telling them tales about distant lands.

In his own words

I like travelling because I can meet different people and learn more about their cultures, religion and the country itself

My children love to know about the countries
I visit, It’s a shame that they are still young but I will definitely take them on a Kumuka Family Tour when they are little older.

Spain is one of my favourite destinations, There is nothing quite like a stroll along a Spanish beach followed by a big meal; the food in Spain always seem so fresh. I also like the people, weather and history.

Returning from Europe Adrian writes in.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to say that I have just finished the European Bonanza tour and it was fantastic. Eleni and Martin were what you would expect from leaders. Knowledgeable and friendly and it made the European experience better for it.

In Spain and Portugal, Cass and Coco were amazing. Coco's ability to thread that bus through the traffic in Madrid to pick us up on time was something to behold. Cass' knowledge and down-to-earth friendly personality (not to mention her knowledge of all the wonderful little facts of Sangria) was an instant hit with the whole group. We all loved her. So I just wanted to say thanks again to all who made it such a fantastic trip. I'll definitely be doing another tour through you guys.
