Glossary of Terms - Kumuka Venture

Add On:

A tour, generally a short one, that can be added to either the start or finish of the tour.

Adventure Travel:

A style of tour that combines cultural activities and sight seeing with adventure activities such as trekking, mountain biking and white water rafting.

Beach Extension:

A short addition to the beginning or end of your tour that is spent on or near the beach. Popular in destinations like Sri Lanka or Thailand.

City Tour:

A tour of a city conducted by the tour leader and/or local guide. This is included in the cost of the tour.

Coach Tour:

A European tour where the primary mode of transport is air-conditioned coach.

Combo:

The combination of two or more tours.

Domestic Flights:

Flights within the borders of a specific country. These are included in the tour price.

Eurostar:

Fast train connection between London and Paris. This is a free service on Kumuka European Coach Tours.

Guaranteed Departures:

This indicates that all departure dates are guaranteed to leave and cannot be cancelled. All Kumuka Summer European tours have Guaranteed Departures. Guaranteed departures are indicated by a guaranteed stamp.

Home Stay:

An overnight stay with a local family. Popular in remote areas in South America and Asia.

Local Guide:

In addition to your tour leader and driver, Kumuka utilise the services of specialised guides who are from the city or area that you are visiting.

Local Payment:

A local payment (where applicable) is in addition to the tour cost and is payed directly to the tour leader at the start of the tour in cash. It is managed by the tour leader and one of the passengers and is for meals and campsite fees. Local payments are generally for Overland tours.

Lodge Based Tours:

Lodge based tours are primarily offered in East Africa and are for passengers who are after a more comfortable tour and do not want to sleep in tents.

Optional Activity:

These are activities that are offered whilst on tour that are not operated or paid for by Kumuka. Your tour leader will advise what optional activities are available but they are not compulsory.

Orientation Tour:

This is similar to a city tour only will not involve a local guide, it is generally spent on the coach as it is shorter than a city tour. It is designed to 'orientate' the passenger with the city they are about to visit and makes navigation during free time in the city much easier.

Overlanding:

Tours operated using Kumuka's purpose built overland vehicles. The vehicles are equipped to be self sufficient and can carry passengers to more remote destinations. Kumuka operate overland tours in Africa, South America and The Middle East.

Pre & Post Tour Accommodation:

Accommodation offered by Kumuka before the tour begins or after it finishes. This is perfect for passengers who want to spend more time in their start or end points. It is an additional cost to the tour price.

Pre Departure Meeting:

A meeting held by the tour leader prior to the commencement of your tour. It is a short meeting that is designed to introduce passengers to each other and to give a brief run-down of how the tour will operate and what to expect.

Self Drive Tours:

You are provided with a car and an itinerary to follow, all accommodation is organised and you can explore at your leisure. Kumuka offer self drive tours in South Africa.

Sleeper Train:

An overnight train with a sleeper cabin, Cabins generally sleep 4 passengers.

Small Group Tour:

Tours operated with a maximum number of 16 (12 in Nepal). They are conducted using a mixture of transport, primarily private minibus and have one tour leader.

Specialist Tours:

These are tours that are operated by a local ground handler appointed by Kumuka and can often be added on to a larger tour, but can also be booked separately. Examples of specialist tours are the Kilimanjaro Climb or Red Sea Diving in Egypt. Special offers and discounts do not apply to specialist tours.

Sustainable Tourism:

Tourism that benefits the local communities that we visit. Kumuka aims to reduce the impact upon local culture and the environment, whilst simultaneously safeguarding and preserving opportunities for future travellers.

Tour Dossier:

Detailed trip notes are available for every tour that Kumuka operate. They provide a day by day itinerary plus important additional information about climate, culture, what to pack and more.

Tour Fund:

A tour fund is payable at the time of booking and covers meals and contributes towards local guides. This payment is exclusive to European Tours.

Tour Leader:

A Kumuka employee who will 'lead' your tour. Our tour leaders are professionals who are highly trained and will do their utmost to ensure you enjoy your tour.

Unicef Donation:

For every booking that Kumuka receive in Asia and Latin America they will contribute $50 to UNICEF.
